SMSF Platform Development

One SMSF platform, improved every month since 2020

CodeFish built Hive, the platform SuperGuardian runs its SMSF business on, and has shipped to it continuously since 2020.

CodeFish Studio designed and built Hive for SuperGuardian, an Australian SMSF administration and accounting firm with offices in Adelaide and Melbourne. Hive brings client, adviser and accountant data into one secure platform, replacing a mix of tools that never talked to each other.

SuperGuardian holds an Australian Financial Services Licence and works to ISO requirements, so the software has to pass an audit as well as make work easier. We have run it as an ongoing partnership since launch, releasing small, tested changes instead of a big rebuild every few years.

Hive at a glance

Hive is the system SuperGuardian runs on every day. It started as a way to join up scattered client data and now carries thousands of funds, the people who manage them and the trustees who own them, all in one secure place.

3.5k+ funds

Self-managed super funds run on Hive.

7k+ members

Fund members whose super is managed through Hive.

1.8k+ users

Trustees, advisers and accountants with access.

6+ years

Running and improving continuously since 2020.

The Challenge

Why couldn't off-the-shelf software run an SMSF business like SuperGuardian?

SuperGuardian administers thousands of self-managed super funds. Every year, each one needs financial statements, a tax return and compliance checks, plus member changes like beneficiary nominations. CodeFish found the information behind that work spread across several programs:

  • Fund records in one system, contacts in another, documents moving by email
  • Staff, advisers and trustees each seeing only part of the picture
  • Simple questions turning into a phone call, three searches and some re-keying

Every answer started with chasing the information down.

The risk was as real as the cost. SuperGuardian holds an Australian Financial Services Licence and works to ISO requirements. Copying client data between systems creates more places for it to go wrong, and makes it harder to prove who saw what.

SuperGuardian looked at off-the-shelf SMSF products first. Each one meant changing how the business worked to fit the software, and none gave them the control over data, access and audit trails a licensed firm needs.

The Approach

How did CodeFish scope a platform for a regulated finance business?

  • Scoping workshop: mapped how a fund moves through the year, from onboarding to financial statements and tax returns, and marked every point where information was re-entered or emailed.
  • Team-wide interviews: talked to the administrators, accountants and client managers doing the daily work, not just the project group.
  • UX and UI design: designed Hive around its three groups of users, with access set by role.
  • Engineering: built in small, tested releases, with the most painful handoffs fixed first.

The interviews turned up most of what mattered. The people doing the work knew where time was lost and which steps carried compliance risk, and much of it never came up in project meetings.

That shaped who sees what. SuperGuardian staff get a workflow view of every fund and what's due. Advisers and accountants see their own clients' funds. Trustees log in to see their fund, members and documents without having to call.

Security and compliance were in the design from day one, not a review at the end. We planned role-based access, audit-friendly records and a deployment setup SuperGuardian could inspect before the first feature was written.

A financial services platform has to pass an audit as well as make the work easier.

The Solution

What does continuous delivery look like on a financial services platform?

CodeFish built Hive as one platform: funds, members, contacts, documents and workflow behind one secure login. Staff track every fund's annual work without switching systems. Advisers and trustees serve themselves, so many of the phone calls simply stop.

Since launch we've run Hive as an ongoing partnership. How we ship matters as much as what we ship:

  • Every change is tested: code review and automated tests, then a staging site for SuperGuardian to check, then production
  • Small, frequent releases: each change is easy to check and easy to roll back
  • The client owns everything: code and pipelines sit in SuperGuardian's own repository, moved across when their ISO work called for full admin control
  • Security is routine: regular vulnerability reviews, plus triage of SuperGuardian's own security scans, fixed in small releases
  • No surprise downtime: infrastructure work, like replacing cloud servers, is planned so clients never notice

The result is a platform that keeps up with the business. Clients get a simpler experience, staff spend less time chasing information, and SuperGuardian can add services or change process without a rebuild.

The Outcome

What changed for SuperGuardian?

One login, one record

Funds, members, contacts, documents and workflow live in one secure platform, so staff stop re-keying data between systems.

Fewer phone calls

Trustees and advisers check their own funds, members and documents online instead of calling to ask.

Audit-ready by default

Role-based access, audit-friendly records and client-owned code support SuperGuardian's AFSL and ISO obligations.

Change without a rebuild

Small, tested monthly releases since 2020 let SuperGuardian add services and change process without replacing the system.

CodeFish Studio's expertise, their approach to security and the quality of their team are the reason I have already recommended them to many others.

Honest fit

When is an ongoing partnership the wrong choice?

A partnership like this only pays off when the software is central to how you earn money and keeps changing. If a product on the market covers your needs and your process isn't your edge, buy the product.

It also needs clear requests from your side. Early on, vague tickets cost both teams time. We now push loosely defined requests back for detail before anyone starts, which keeps the budget on work that matters.

Questions financial services firms ask about this kind of build

CodeFish built Hive, a custom web platform that brings SuperGuardian's SMSF client, adviser and accountant data into one secure place. CodeFish has kept improving it through an ongoing partnership since 2020.

Every change is reviewed and tested automatically before release, the code sits in the client's own repository for audit access, and vulnerability reviews run as part of normal work. We also work through the client's own security scans and ISO requirements.

Off-the-shelf products would have made SuperGuardian change how it works and given less control over data and access. Custom software fits the business, and SuperGuardian owns the code.

Ongoing work runs through Apex, a monthly partnership with a six-month minimum, priced to the size of team you need. If you are starting from scratch, a fixed-price Rapid Insight Workshop at $9,000 + GST scopes the work first. All prices are AUD ex-GST.

The client does. Hive's code and pipelines live in SuperGuardian's own repository.

Mid-sized Australian businesses whose software is central to how they serve clients, especially in regulated sectors like financial services, where the system has to keep changing and stay secure.
