Stop Talking AI and Think First Principles

Stop Talking AI Have you ever ended up in a debate on these?

  • Is AI good or bad?
  • Is it Revolutionary or Overrated?
  • Is it biased, risky or confusing? The AI space is evolving so fast, and the 'AI' term is so broad that it's important to be clear on what you really mean when you talk about AI. This debate is a rabbit hole and it doesn't matter which side you sit on. Most of the time these questions don't have an answer 'yet'. In these situations, it's valuable to step back and use 'first principles thinking' when considering applying AI solutions in your business. To do this, break your problem down into the facts you know are undeniably true and then start thinking about strategy and solutions. The truth is, AI can be all those things depending on context. What matters is your context. Don't for a second think that staying away from AI will keep you safe from the negatives either because unfortunately, humans are no different. We are biased, we overhype, we make mistakes, and we are often the weakest link in security. This ongoing debate from 'experts' helps inform, but it also stifles the conversation. It confuses and distracts our mindset from the very reason of 'why' are talking about this, and 'what' are we trying to solve? Let's remind ourselves that AI is not new. We benefit from the deliberate deployment of AI every day: camera detection, weather forecasts, fraud checks, machine diagnostics, spam filters, voice assistants, predictive text. These pioneering ideas solved very specific problems long before they were labelled AI. They also did not face the barrage of criticisms AI has today. Are these tools perfect? Not in the slightest. Autocorrect has caused embarrassing texting moments and my security camera AI at home once thought a wheelie bin falling over at night time was a human. So what's the point? This technology is leaps and bounds better than they used to be and they will continue to evolve. Every great software was great until it was replaced by something better or consumer preferences changed. Think a bit deeper. Stop debating the pros and cons of AI and return to First Principles thinking. What are you trying to achieve? Focus your attention on deliberate solutions, not AI as a slogan. Start small, build confidence and expand with the evolution of this technology. At CodeFish Studio, this is what we do. For our clients, and for ourselves.
