Building the SA Fishing App with the South Australian Government
At CodeFish Studio, we’re passionate about creating digital solutions that make life easier for communities. One recent project we’re especially proud of is the SA Fishing App, built in partnership with the South Australian Government's Department of Primary Industries and Regions.
This official app is designed to support recreational fishers across the state. By putting the latest rules, maps, and species guides in their hands, the app helps people enjoy fishing responsibly while protecting South Australia’s unique marine environment.
Why the app matters
Fishing is one of South Australia’s favourite pastimes — from throwing a line off the jetty with family, to exploring the state’s coastlines and rivers. But with so many zones, restrictions, and guidelines to follow, even experienced fishers can find it tricky to stay on top of the rules.
That’s where the SA Fishing App comes in. It makes it simple to:
- Access up-to-date fishing rules and regulations.
- Explore interactive maps with closures, permitted zones, and marine parks.
- Check species guides with size and bag limits.
- Log trips and catches with easy-to-use tools.
This isn’t just about convenience — it’s about encouraging sustainability and compliance while enhancing the fishing experience for everyone.
Our process
Like every project we deliver at CodeFish Studio, the SA Fishing App followed a structured, user-first process.
1. Discovery and scope definition. We worked closely with PIRSA (Primary Industries and Regions SA) to define the app’s purpose and scope. Through collaborative workshops, we identified core user needs and ensured the app would answer real-world challenges fishers face.
2. UX and Figma design. Our design team brought these insights to life through interactive wireframes and polished Figma prototypes. We focused on creating a clear, intuitive interface that could be used quickly and easily — whether on the boat, the jetty, or the beach.
3. React Native development. To deliver a seamless experience across both iOS and Android, we developed the app using React Native. This approach allowed for efficient, cross-platform development while ensuring performance, stability, and scalability.
4. Testing and launch. Working side by side with PIRSA, we tested the app before its public release, so it was ready to deliver real value from day one.
The outcome
The SA Fishing App is now live and serving as the go-to tool for recreational fishing in South Australia. It’s helping thousands of fishers:
- Make informed choices on the water.
- Stay compliant with regulations.
- Respect and protect the unique SA environment.
For us, this project reflects the best of what we do — combining design, technology, and collaboration to serve communities. We’re proud to have delivered a digital product that not only makes fishing more enjoyable but also contributes to a sustainable future.
You can find the app on PIRSA’s official SA Fishing App page.
